Family tree 'Edgar VC' Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2011
WINEMAKING NOTES
Made exclusively for Familytree Wine Club members, these wines are named after people in our family trees. They are very unique wines made as a “one off” from carefully selected batches of fruit and only made in great vintages. Only available from the winery, these wines will be different from vintage to vintage and stocks are very limited.
Each and every ANZAC day, the Towner family remember and reminisce about their valiant uncle, Edgar Thomas Towner (1890–1972) VC MC. A very brave man who served his country well, he was John Towner’s [Owner of Flametree Wines] uncle on his father side. A highly decorated soldier who was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded. He also received a Military Cross medal for his bravery.
At harvest time in 2011, the reds being picked looked amazing; both the cabernet sauvignon and malbec grapes were being described as bold, valuable, inspiring and very distinguished in character. It was a vintage certainly worth remembering and so in April when vintage was complete and Anzac Day came to pass, we felt it was only fitting to name this batch of bold wine after Edgar and his Victoria Cross.
Blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec has produced a wine with juicy fruit flavours from Malbec, supported by great structure from Cabernet. These two varieties are a great foil for each other and produce deeply coloured wines with lovely soft fruit flavours. Two of our best parcels of fruit were fermented in open pots and then pressed to barrel for twelve months. 33% of the oak was new; the remainder was older French oak.
TASTING NOTES
A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Malbec creates a beautiful deep red/purple colour, with a pink red hue. The nose displays aromas of violets, juicy dark fruits, orange chocolate and cedar. Very elegant, with a juicy mid-palate and fine emery tannins coating the palate to finish. The blending of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon gives this wine big juicy fruit flavours from the Malbec with smooth elegant structure from the Cabernet.
