2023 Flametree Margaret River Shiraz
Winemaking
The 2023 vintage produced some wonderful Shiraz parcels, the direct result of a very warm ripening period that suited Shiraz. Once again we incorporated a portion of sun-dried stems, 20-30% whole bunch and some whole berries in the Wallcliffe ferments. The idea was to get some additional perfume, structure and complexity into the Shiraz whilst nurturing the inherent fruit power of the vintage. Whole bunch and sun-dried stem parcels were wild fermented at slightly cooler temperatures than previous vintages, this partial carbonic maceration technique introduces a vibrant, spicy red fruit component to the blend. After pressing, the batches were racked off heavy lees and then inoculated for MLF before being transferred into used French oak puncheons. After 10 months maturation in oak the batches were blended and bottled.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Shiraz has a wide range of fruit flavours and aromas, the focus is predominantly on perfume and elegance rather than raw fruit power. The use of soft extraction techniques, cooler ferment temperatures and open fermenters has resulted in a wine with lovely perfume, dark fruit flavours and fine tannin structure. The palate has plenty of dark cherries, plums, blueberry, scorched earth, liquorice and spice. The introduction of stems and older oak has given the wine greater complexity, more spice and added texture. Enjoy now or anytime over the next 5-10 years.
